Play God

You cannot play god, then wash your hands of the thing that you've created. Sooner or later the day comes when you can't hide from the things you have done anymore.

Commander Adama from Battlestar Galactica "Mini Series Part I"

We all make choices that affects another person or people. Sometimes our influence is small but other times we change the course of another person’s life completely. That is why we should always be wary of the consequences of our actions. As a commander, Adama must be aware of how his actions will affect those who he leads.

Magic Within

Everyone has magic within them; but very few discover it and learn to spend it wisely.

The Queen from "Mirror, Mirror"

I think that every person on this earth has a characteristic or a talent that makes them unique. The question is whether an individual will discover this and learn to let this characteristic or talent shine. The Queen from “Mirror, Mirror” had the talent of magic, but rather than learn to use it wisely, she uses it for her own selfish needs.

Good Things and Bad

Every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things. But vice versa... the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant.

The Doctor from Doctor Who "Vincent and the Doctor"

Life is not nearly as black and white as some believe. Although we may have dominate traits, we are still a compilation of both good and bad, evil and moral. In our lifetime, we make mistakes and we have regrets, but we also have successes as well. We should not let the mistakes tarnish the successes. Also we should not forget the lessons from our mistakes just because we have had victories. The Doctor’s character has lived long enough that he has large lists of both failures and successes. His choices have not always been good, but he still strives to help others and make the universe a good place.

Being Human

Being human is not about what you are, it's about who you are.

Rebecca from "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant"

In case it’s not obvious, I am a science fiction, fantasy, and horror nerd. I have noticed a pattern in all of the books, television shows, and movies I have read or watched. The pattern is that there is notion that being human does not necessarily depend on your DNA. I know this sounds silly, because as far as I know there is no substantial proof of supernatural or extraterrestrial life, but I think this message still has significance. Although we are all human, there are numerous types of personalities, beliefs, and perspectives. So to label us all in the same category is impossible. Just like the “freaks” in “Cirque du Freak, we are all different and it is our choices, not our biology that determines who we are.

Fortunes Change

Don't get to the end of your life and realize that you've just lived the length of it. I want you to live the breadth of it as well. Remember as you go forth today to never give up because that could be the time and place where the tides turn and your fortunes change.

The Glaive from Lost Girl "Truth and Consequences"

Time is so misleading, especially as we get older. Days, weeks, and even years can pass by so fast. By the time we realize how much time has gone by, it is too late to right the wrongs or to erase our regrets. This is why it is so vital to appreciate every moment because the tide can turn so quickly. The characters from “Lost Girl” face such crazy experiences every day, it is important that they appreciate the present because they never know what the future holds.

Greatness

Some men are born great; others have greatness thrust upon them.

Teddy Roosevelt from "Night at the Museum"

I am not sure if it matters if an individual was born with talent or if they had greatness thrust upon them. I think what matters most is the choices he or she makes with his or her greatness. If a person can make choices that affect people in a positive way, than I think the greatness that person carries speaks for itself. Teddy Roosevelt, in “Night at the Museum” was technically wax incarnate, but his wisdom was no less effective.

Bitterest Truth

The bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lies.

Griffin from "Men in Black 3"

This quote is kind of confusing but in a way it makes perfect sense. No one wants to deal with the harsh reality of truth, but in a way being fed a string of sickly sweet lies is no better. I think it is just a matter of personal preference. You can heal after feeling the pain of a hard truth or you can live your life in blissful ignorance. I am a big fan of Griffin’s character in “Men in Black 3” because he seemed to be the kind of guy (or alien, to be exact) who would give you the truth in order to make you a stronger person.

No Limits on You

There are no limits on you if you don't put them on yourself.

Adele Stackhouse from True Blood "Thank You"

Sometimes the best advice is the simple truth. Adele’s character in “True Blood” was a woman who appeared to be unimposing, but who was actually wise and a tad rebellious. She did not put limits on herself or her family. I like her philosophy and I think it’s ironic that we are sometimes the biggest critics of our own talents. If we open up our hearts to believing we can do anything, than the sky is the limit.

More Than Ordinary Life

I remember the nights, caught up in dreaming my goodbyes. Watching the door for anything more than an ordinary life.

Greek Fire in "Top of the World"

This quote really spoke to my inner dreamer. For those who spend more time in their dreams than they pay attention to reality, it is easy to imagine a life that is more than the ordinary. However, spending a life spent in the clouds can make you forget the life on ground. I think it is best to find a balance between dreaming and grounding yourself. Dreams are wonderful to escape the hardships of reality, but reality is where life really happens.

No Fairy Godmothers

You want people to look at you differently? You make them. You want to change things? You're going to have to go out there and change them yourself. Because there are no fairy godmothers in this world.

Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time “The Price of Gold”

In fairytales the heroes are sometimes helped by magical beings that give them the tools to overcome the villains. Unfortunately, our reality is not like fairytales. Just as Emma said, if we want to change the world, we have to do this ourselves. We have to be our own fairy godmothers, which is not an easy thing to do. I think that if you are one of the people who can change the world for the better than you deserve a happy ending after all.

Worth Fighting For

Real happiness, real friends; those are things worth living for, worth fighting for.

Andy Knightley from “The World’s End”

Having friends who are loyal to you and who will always be there for you is a wonderful thing. If you are lucky enough to have this, you should definitely fight for it. The happiness that comes from surrounding yourself with people who truly love you for who you are is a wonderful feeling we all strive for in our lifetimes. And the world from “The World’s End” is definitely one that is stronger when friends stick together.

Fear Can Make You Kind

I know you're afraid, but being afraid is all right. If you're very wise and very strong, fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind.

Clara Oswald from Doctor Who "Listen"

There is no doubt that fear can bring out the worst in people. Back a beast into a corner and that animal will fight for its life, which is a very natural survival instinct. However, the individual who meets the object of their fear with a kind smile is the person who has overcome their fear and proved to be the better person. Clara is a person who takes her fear and uses it to help others. I think it is perfect that Clara is the one who teaches the Doctor the lesson that allows him to save countless lives.

Faith in Yourself

You must always have faith in people and most importantly you must always have faith in yourself.
Elle Woods from "Legally Blonde"

Going through life without having faith in people is a very lonely and difficult road. However, having no faith in yourself is an even worse fate. In order to truly trust and love someone, we must learn to do the same to ourselves. Elle Woods started the movie relying on someone to show her the best of herself. Once she realized and appreciated her own talents, she found herself in a healthy and happy situation.

Free from Fear

Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear and how to be free from it. That's the point.

Veronica Roth in "Divergent"

Fear is such a tricky emotion. Fear is a good survival mechanism but it can also suffocate us so much we stop living. Just as Roth says in this quote, we need to find the balance between knowing when to run from danger and when to break the shackles of fear. This is not an easy thing to do. The main character of “Divergent” stepped from her comfort zone and started living her life when she learned to controlled her fear.

What You are Given

Life is not about good luck or bad luck. It is about what you do with what you are given.

Joanna Beauchamp from Witches of East End "Oh What a World"

This ties in with many of the other quotes regarding luck I have posted. We often want to blame luck for our problems and successes, but I think we need to start putting credit where credit is due. Our choices are often responsible for how our life turns out. When we realize this, we can start making the right choices that will result in good things happening.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Today is a Gift

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift that is why it is called the present.
Master Oogway from "Kung Fu Panda"

It seems like the present is often taken for granted. I know that it is very easy to become so obsessed over what happened in the past and what could happen in the future. However, I think a person who can enjoy and appreciate the present is someone who is doing well in life. It seems that the present goes by so fast and the magic that can happen in a single moment can be gone in an instant. Master Oogway’s character obviously appreciates the present and helps others to see the wisdom in doing so.

Game of Chess

Chess is just a game. Real people aren't pieces. And you can't assign more value to some of them than to others. People are not a thing that you can sacrifice. The lesson is that anyone who looks on the world as if it was a game of chess deserves to lose.

Harold Finch from Person of Interest "If-Then-Else"

Throughout existence, I think human history has been a grand game of chess. Although I wish the world could follow Finch’s philosophy in this quote, this is not the reality we live in. Those in power, and even those without power, have assigned different levels of value to everyone else. They have sacrificed people or used them like game pieces. Unfortunately, I think this trend will last until the end of time, unless something can change. I think that this quote exemplifies Harold Finch’s character. He wants to help everyone, no matter how much value is placed on them by society; that is why he created the machine to help those in need.

Blind Journey

Sometimes you gotta take a journey. Even if it's a blind one.

Lettie Mae Thornton from True Blood "Almost Home"

I was never much a fan of Lettie Mae’s character in “True Blood” but I have to admit that in the end I think she finished her story in a good manner. She may not have wanted to end up in the supernatural world, but because of her love for her daughter, she followed a ghost, even when those around her thought she was crazy. I know how nerve wracking taking a trip without knowing the destination can be. However, I think these types of trips tend to end up with the best outcome.

My Masterpiece

I still fall on my face sometimes and I can't color inside the lines cause I'm perfectly incomplete. I'm still working on my masterpiece.

Jessie J in "Masterpiece"

I think there is a fine line between being confident and being arrogant. I think the difference between these two actions is being confident is knowing that you are not untouchable but still having enough faith in yourself to carry on with life. While being arrogant means you refuse to see that you have faults, just like every other person on this planet. I have respect for Jessie J, because from what I can tell from her songs, she is not afraid to admit that she makes mistakes.

Quality of Convictions

It is the quality of one's convictions that determines success, not the number of followers.

Remus Lupin from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II"

I think this quote has a much needed lesson for society now. Our society and it’s addiction to social media has created a phenomenon in which an individual thinks they are successful based on the number of people who view a page or click a “like” button. We have lost our realism and pride based on a finished product that is done correctly. We no longer care if we are accomplishing something based on genuine talents. All we care about is how many people are looking at us. I always loved Lupin's character in the Harry Potter series because he was a man who didn't seek attention, but he gave good advice, in my opinion. He cared more about his impact rather than how many followers he had.

Tide Can Turn

Even in the most hopeless battle, there is a moment when the tide can turn. Where there was no possibility of rescue, a way presents itself.
Aidan Waite from Being Human U.S. "I've Got you Under Your Skin"

This is a good reminder to keep holding on to hope. Hope is an amazing phenomenon that helps pull us through obstacles that are attempting to break our spirits. If we gave up every time something bad happened then we wouldn’t get very far in life. We would miss so much beauty and reward. The characters of “Being Human” are not unfamiliar to the tragedies of life, but they keep going.

Best People

You are entirely bonkers. But I will tell you a secret. All the best people are.

Alice Kingsley from "Alice in Wonderland"

To say that in order to be the best an individual needs to be crazy is unrealistic. However, I think this quote is saying that sometimes the most brilliant people are the ones who look the craziest to ordinary people. That is why, when we see something that seems too extraordinary, we might want to learn from it rather than destroy it. In “Alice in Wonderland,” the man who is portrayed as the craziest is the one who helps the heroine out the most.

The Fight

It's not the win it's the fight. Evil is relentless. It always has been. You take one evil out and another one pops up to replace it. But if we stop fighting, if we give up, what does that say about us? The fight, that's what matters.

Steve Jinks from Warehouse 13 "The Living and the Dead"

When life becomes hard, I am usually someone who encourages a fight. If not, what else is life for? From the moment we are born, we are barraged by obstacles. If we don’t try to fight them, then I think we have lost our purpose. Typically, after struggling through troubles, we find something that is worth the fight.

Choose to Do Right

It's the choices that make us who we are and we can always choose to do what's right.

Peter Parker from "Spiderman 3"

I truly believe that who we are is based largely on the decisions we make. If you think about it, we are faced with thousands of decisions each day. And yes, some may be the smallest choices, but don’t ever underestimate these little decisions because they can have the largest effects that influence not only your life but the people around you. This is very evident in “Spiderman 3,” because when Peter Parker started making decisions swayed by his emotions, bad things happened to those around him.

Good Story

We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one eh.
The Doctor from Doctor Who "The Big Bang"

Since our lives are so short, the only way we can become immortal is by the legacy, or story that we leave behind. In order to make a difference in this enormous universe, we need our actions to be so influential they are passed down from generation to generation. That is the only way we can touch the people that come after us. In the show, The Doctor, who has no home or family, is just a fleeting story that briefly passes through people’s life. And because he chooses to do good deeds, his story becomes a ray of hope for those who he touches.

Choices Made

What is it that makes a man a man? Is it his origins, the way he comes to life? It's the choices he makes, not how he starts things but how decides to end them.

John Myers from "Hellboy"

This quote is for March 6, 2015. In this society, there are so many standards to what being a “man” and even a “woman” means. In regards to these expectations, I follow a philosophy similar to John Myers. Our origins, or the bodies we were born with, should not dedicate how we should act. That should be our choice since we are the ones who have to live with the decisions we make. Just like Hellboy, our outward appearance does not necessarily reflect who we are inside.

Luck is Personal

Luck is personal; we all have our own. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but it's yours and it follows you wherever you go. And luck can change because luck was a state of mind.
Lynne Matson in "Nil"

I know sometimes it is hard to believe, but I think, in some cases, you can change your luck. I think there are times when our circumstances are influenced by our state of mind. If we believe the world is bad, then we will notice only the bad things that are happening, and vice versa. Do I think this is always the case? No. However, I think we have more influence on our luck than we realize. In the cases of the main characters of "Nil," they take their circumstances into their own hands instead of relying on some invisible force to decide their fate.

We Prevail

We humans hope when there is no hope and we believe when to believe is idiotic. But sometimes, in spite of everything, we prevail.

Queen Andromeda from "Wrath of the Titans"

I think the most amazing attribute that human beings possess is the ability to accomplish anything we set our minds to if we really want something bad enough. We also can have enough faith in someone or something that we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way merely because of our beliefs. I think our hope, perseverance, and faith is what makes us so remarkable. Queen Andromeda is an example of this. She fought against gods and monsters even when the odds were not in her favor.

Best Things in Life

The best things in life comes from not playing it safe.
Simon Roberts from The Crazy Ones "The Spectacular"

I admit, I have a hard time with this quote in lieu of Robin Williams suicide. Robin Williams was one of my all-time favorite actor and to think of him taking such a wonderful talent and personality from this world breaks my heart. In no way am I trying to speak ill of the deceased. I think Williams and even his character in the television show “The Crazy Ones” had personalities that took risks and acted in ways that people were not expecting. In my opinion, Robin Williams was such a bright flame of a light that was extinguished too early.

Scary at First

It was scary at first but every great thing starts out a little scary, doesn't it.
R from "Warm Bodies"

As a person who is searching for a lasting career, I understand how scary something can be when you first seek it out. It makes sense though that by doing something great, a person is pushing himself or herself out of his or her comfort zone; otherwise it would not be a great act. In order to do great things, you have to overcome your fears or anxieties.

Stolen Respect

What good is love and respect if it has to be stolen?
Old Prisoner in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland "Bad Blood"

There are some people in this world who can scare or intimidate others in order to force them to fake respect and love. I can’t understand how people think this is a success. I would rather have little to no genuine love and respect than have a ton of deceitfulness. I feel more satisfied when I know I have earned someone’s love and respect.

The Forces of Time and Space

These forces that often make time and space, that can shape and alter who we imagine our self to be, begin long before we are born and continue after we perish.
Robert Frobisher from "Cloud Atlas"

This quote is for February 28. I will not say that I know for sure if there are deities or supernatural forces that created us, the Earth and the universe. However, I do think that in terms of the entire universe, the human race, and even Earth, is a very small part. I personally think that after we have all passed away and the Earth is no more, the universe will still remain without us.
