Means to an End

What’s more depressing? To believe that there is no grand plan and that all is random chance? Or that all is by a single unified design and that you are nothing more than the dancing puppets of a universe that merely sees you as a means to an end?

Both options can be either depressing or inspirational, depending on how you look at it. I think it is a good idea to think about the meaning of life, as long as you don't let it drag you down or make you so philosophical that you can be grounded in reality.
