Almost like Magic

Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it. But when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen almost like magic.

Laini Taylor in "Daughter of Smoke and Bone"

“Daughter of Smoke and Bone” is not a novel unfamiliar with the concepts of magic and hope. The main character Karou was raised by magical and bizarre creatures and her new love Akiva is an angel. This couple’s love is not approved by many, but their hope in their relationship and each other is strong. As far as we know there is no magic in this world, but I do agree with Taylor. If we keep hold of our hope and we put all our belief into this hope, then I think we come the closest to making magic.

Elemental Drive of Existence

To be acknowledged for who and what I am; no more, no less, not for a claim, not for approval. The simple truth of that recognition; this has been the elemental drive of my existence and it must be achieved if I am to live or die with dignity.
Andrew Martin from "Bicentennial Man"

Bicentennial Man is a movie that asked the question of whether a machine could become a man. During the many years of Andrew's existence, this machine searched for the truth of his existence. I think the film's message is one that almost every single person on this planet can understand. We all want to be recognized as a unique individual. For most of our lives we strive to create an image or reputation, one that we can be proud of and one that defines us.

We Have Today

Nobody can predict the future, but that doesn't mean that we should live as if we won't have one. We have today, we have right now, and we hope for tomorrow.

Henry Langston from Resurrection "Afflictions"

Resurrection is a show comprised mainly of second chances; the chance to reconnect with loved ones and the chance to change the mistakes of the past. No one has a crystal ball. In fact, I think if we had a way to divine the future, we would have no hope. By knowing our fate we are doomed to act out this outcome. With no way of seeing what is to come we can always hold on to the possibility of a better future and we can change our destiny.

Keep on Living

Courage is when you're afraid but you keep on moving anyway. Courage is when you're in pain but you keep on living anyway.

The Strange Familiar in "Courage Is"

This song is a lovely reminder to push past our fears because we have so much potential. This potential can be stunted if we are too afraid to pursue our possibilities. Our lives will always be full of pain and suffering, whether small or immense, but this does not mean that we should stop living our lives.

Important Dream

It's important to have a dream. Otherwise you might notice where you really are.

Naomi A. Alderman in "Doctor Who: Borrowed Time"

We all wish that we could live in an ideal world where all our dreams come true; unfortunately, this is not real life. Still, we should not give up on our dreams. Pursuing dreams is a coping mechanism; a way to push past the many obstacles during our lifetime. "Borrowed Time" is a book that centers on the harsh consequences of cheating time. It makes sense that Alderman would give a quote containing hope for her characters that have so little.

Make the Journey

From now on you will be traveling the road between who you think you are and who you can be. The key is to allow yourself to make the journey.

Mia Thermopolis's Father from "The Princess Diaries"

As we take our first steps into the New Year, we are standing on the edge of possibilities. We can grab hold of these opportunities or we can cling to our old habits. I think "The Princess Diaries" represents this concept in a good way. We can remain as the invisible and powerless Mia Thermopolis or we can take control in a manner that royalty would.

Changes to Come

Well, since my attempt to post a quote every day last year did not go as planned, I thought I could give it another shot in 2015. This year I will be concentrating on discussing the character or type of entertainment from which the quote came from. So here we go again, I hope you enjoy.

We all change, when you think about it. We're all different people all through our lives. And that's okay, that's good. You gotta keep moving. So long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear.

The Doctor from Doctor Who "The Time of the Doctor"

Well today is the first day of 2015. Just as the Doctor was on the precipice of his regeneration when he gave this speech, we face changes in the New Year. Whether we like it or not we are letting go of the person we were in the year past and we are embracing the person we will become. Although we change each year, it is always important to remember who we have been in the past, because our past holds our mistakes and successes. I guess the bonus of this New Year is that we don't have to become an entirely new person like the Doctor.
